Show Notes

You hear people say it all the time when asked about their life and what they hope for when they might face God. It sounds something like, "I think I have lived a good life" or "I hope I have done enough" with the idea being that how we live in this life will determine whether we go to heaven. While the writer of Hebrews addresses that issue using theological truths all throughout the letter, here at the end of Hebrews 12 he bluntly and starkly confronts this false mentality. Using the metaphor of Mount Sinai and Mount Zion to represent legalism/the law verses grace alone, he clearly and boldly states that the means by which we choose to approach God (either through your own good works, or through grace and faith in Jesus Christ) is the same means by which God will judge you. This is a very relevant truth for the American church where a recent survey revealed that 35% of "pastors" do not believe that Jesus is the only path to salvation and that people can "go to heaven" based on their good works and effort. Hebrews 12:18-29.
